Library protest won’t go quietly

IT IS approximately 100 days since the closure of Weir Hall Library but if anybody thought we would ever give up then they probably need to think again.
The library will be back and hopefully, when the Tory administration disappears into thin air by May 2010 and the Mike Ryes and Mike Lavenders of this world are confined along with their Tory cronies to the dustbin of history, then perhaps we can start rebuilding Edmonton. (Four-star status – what four-star status? They must be joking).
It is absolutely clear that I have never been charitable to the Tories and I do not intend to start now as they have neglected Edmonton in more ways than one and more often than we would have liked. On a daily basis, I am inundated with phone calls, whether it is about dog fouling, litter, unsociable behaviour or uneven pavements. The list goes on.
The present situation needs a big improvement all round. This can be achieved if we continue to keep the council aware of what needs to be done.
We will be at the former Weir Hall Library site on April 4 from 11am till 1pm to remind everyone of the great injustice and that no matter how loud Mr Lavender is shouting at the people of Edmonton, we still have the power and the ability to shout back even louder.
Please bring with you any empty jam jars as we will be putting candles in as a symbolic gesture to keep the flame of the campaign alive.
Councillor George Savva

POLICE are advising library staff to fix DVDs and CDs to shelves after a series of costly thefts from the new Fore Street library in Edmonton.
A video games console was stolen and CDs, videos and DVDs were removed from their cases, according to Councillor George Savva.
One user, who did not want to be named, said staff only realised the goods were missing when people tried to borrow them.
She said: “The borough was expected to operate this library on ‘trust’ but this has not proved to be suitable at this site.”
The library opened last month and has more books and audiovisual equipment than the one in Silver Street which closed in December.
The move was criticised by residents who said that Weir Hall library should not be closed and that Fore Street was not convenient for schools. They complained that many people would have to cross the A406 to get to it.
Library staff are also reported to be worried about “loitering” in the library and have called in the police crime prevention officer for advice on security.
